These flat fans, called Uchiwa, are much more than simple summer objects: they are textile works of art born of ancestral know-how.
Each piece is the result of a rare collaboration between two Japanese craftsmen: a master fan-maker, who handcrafts the structure in bamboo and washi paper, and Makiko Tokunaga, Tokushima-based artist.
The fabric covering each fan is dyed using the’indigo Sukumo, a fermented form of natural 100% indigo, using processes handed down from generation to generation. The motifs Kasa-maki, These are created using a spiral binding technique, evoking organic, fluid, almost celestial forms.
Each fan is a unique piece, to be admired as much as used. It can be used to gently cool you on a hot day, or hung like a textile painting, paying homage to the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship.
By purchasing this product, you are helping to fund Makiko's visit to France in 2026.
